1951Feb 1Is elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters as one whose works are "likely to achieve a permanent place in American culture."
1951-55 Is president of the American Composers Alliance.
1953 Is appointed adjunct professor of music at Columbia Univer- sity. Is elected vice-president of the Contemporary Music Society.
1955 Is co-author, with Sidney Cowell, of Charles Ives and His Music (New York: Oxford University Press).
1956AugSails for Dublin with Mrs. Cowell, to begin trip around the world under a Rockefeller Foundation grant to survey music in Asia (primarily Iran, India, and Japan).
1961 Is appointed by President Kennedy to represent the U.S.A. at the International Music Conference at Teheran and at the East- West Music Encounter in Tokyo.
1962Feb 13Is elected vice-president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
 May 27Is awarded the Henry Hadley Medal by the National Associa- tion of American Composers and Conductors.
1965Dec 10Dies after a prolonged illness.
