396Solo [for violin (and thunder stick?)]
 D 1924 (CD 291)
C For violin (CD); early reviews mention the thunder stick as well. First
seen on HC's program at Bechstein Hall, Berlin, 26 Mar 1926, possibly
its first public performance. A Berlin review set the pattern most
reviews would follow: the "schnarrenden Brummton" of the thunder
stick did not enhance the sound of the "harmless violin melody."
397 Suite for Violin and Piano 1925
(1) Largo, pl-3 [=383/2]
(2) Allegretto, p4-6
(3) Andante tranquillo, p7-9
(4) Allegro marcato, pIQ [ = 393]
(5) Andante calmato, pi 1-14
(6) Presto, pl5-17
D This surely is the work recorded in CD as No. 290, of 1924: "Suite
for Violin, 6 parts." Yet the draft score bears HC's own date of 1925,
and no record of a performance or publication has been found before
early 1926.
F The performance by Leo Linder and HC at Aeolian Hall, New York,
2Feb 1926, was billed merely as the "first New York performance,"
and among the Cowell business papers is one with the following nota-
tion: "1st pert. 1926, Leo Linder(?), H. C., Warsaw." But Linder
and HC did not leave for Europe until a month or so after the New
York recital, and the earliest Warsaw program found for them is "Dnia
29 marca (1926)."
M Draft, chiefly in pencil, incomplete on scattered pages (8-9,12,14-16,
18-21) of a 21p holograph containing 5 other works by HC and 1
not by him nor in his hand. Pages 14-15 contain a 7th movement,
