 I The middle part was written for a violin; HC*s draft score, source
(a) below, is for 2 violins and cello. Two violins were used when the
work was played at the first of the Copland-Sessions concerts in New
York, Litde Theatre, 30 Dec 1928; by the Hans Lange Quartet, New
York, 3 Feb 1929; and at the Berkeley Violin Club, Berkeley, CA,
15 Nov 1930. The "(or viola)" indication on source (a) below appears
to be a distincdy second choice, no doubt suggested because the or-
dinary string trio uses a viola and insistence on 2 violins might cause
the work to be passed over.
 F At Aeolian Hall, New York, 2 Feb 1926, Ralph Henkle (violin) and
Oswald Mazzuccki (cello) were joined by Harry Waller on viola (play-
ing under HC's original collective tide: Chapter in Seven Paragraphs);
and the Los Angeles performance on 10 Jun 1926 used both viola and
collective tide.
 M (a) No complete MS score of the Trio is known. The pencil draft
score on 8p lacks Paragraphs 3 and 6. "Violin 2 (or viola)."
