Fountain (no. 414), which dates from 1923-25 and may have been
conveniendy at hand when HC wanted to jot down his idea for a
Ruggles 50th birthday greeting.
 T "If I had a birthday / And were thirty-five / I'd sing like a bird / And
be glad I was alive." By HC, more or less?
 M (a) Ink fair copy among Carl Ruggles papers. Music Library, Yale
University; words and music virtually complete despite a large
discoloration and an even worse tear that destroyed the tempo
mark, if any; 4m on Ip, with unidentified sketches at the bottom
and on verso.
(b) Pencil draft complete in 5m on p4, following draft of Fairy
Fountain (no. 414), an4 headed "CarFs B.day." No tempo mark.
 C SRC believes that in those days reaching 35 held some special signifi-
cance among men.

 C A painter, Alberti Spratt, heard HC play this piece at Carmel, 13
Jul 1928, and included this comment among his reactions to some of
the works on the program: "Domnu, the Mother of Waters?rhyth-
mic?endless beat?The movement that must never cease. Repeti-
tion of deep blue jade?ecstasy points of brilliant light. Bound with
pure violet shadows." (No. 669 in Martha L. Manion, Writings about
Henry Cowell [Brooklyn: I.S.A.M., 1982], quoting Carmelite, 18 Jul
1928, p4.)
