That seems to have been the first performance of the piano piece under
the new tide, though HC probably had played the piece as Maestoso.
429a Marked Passages for Chamber Orchestra
D Arrangement of the piano piece Maestoso (above) as movement 3 of
Sinfonietta (no. 443). The existence of this arrangement cannot be
documented earlier than the date of its first performance (28 April
1928), but since the tide was used on Richard Buhlig's recital, 15 Feb
1928, it probably had already been made by then.
430Piece for Percussion [for piano]
D This tide is known only from its appearance on HC's London recital,
Wigmore Hall, 16 Jun 1926 (review in London Times, 18 Jun 1926,
pl2, col2). One would suspect it of being another designation for Piece
for Piano 1924 (no. 389/1), but that more famous piece is also on the
program, called Piece for Keyboard and Strings. Both pieces are
starred on the printed program, meaning that they are "played direcdy
on the strings."
431[Piece for two string pianos]
D Mentioned as newly completed in HC's letter to his father of 18 Oct
1926
M One page, at least, of a work that may fit this description is among
miscellaneous fragments and sketches at LC, with "1st part" at the
bottom of the page, 20m to be played on the bars with a hard rubber
stick. The 2nd Part, at the top of the page, has 14m (plus repeats)
to be played on the strings with a padded stick (or by a flute, if a
second piano cannot be found).
432ARemembrance [for Leo Linder for violin and piano]
[No tempo mark]
D [1926] At bottom of page: "This is a copy of the original, given to
me by Henry Cowell, in poss. of Leo Linder?Aug. twenty-third
[1926?], L. L."
M Linder's ink copy complete in 20m on verso of no. 761, M(c)
433 The Sleep Music of the Dagna [for piano strings]
Lento
D HC to J. 0. Varian, 18 Oct 1926: "Just have composed The Sleep
Music of the Dagna (for piano strings)."
