 I Solo rhythmicon 2223 4331 str
F The rhythmicon was demonstrated at the New School, New York,
19 Jan 1932, and elsewhere on later occasions (see no. 485), but a
true public performance of this work under its original tide,
Rhythmicana, with Theremin's instrument, was never achieved. Nor
was it with a second rhythmicon made by Theremin (upon order by
Nicolas Slonimsky), which eventually went to the Smithsonian Insti-
tution, Washington. Only on 3 Dec 1971 was the work given a proper
performance, in Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University, and not
with one of Theremin's mechanisms but with the aid of "that great
friend of the arts," the PDP-10 computer: the rhythmicon part was
"realized" by Leiand Smith, the Stanford Symphony Orchestra con-
ducted by Sandor Salgo. For a 2nd performance, at the Berkshire
Music Center, Tanglewood, MA, 8 Aug 1974, cond. Gunther Schuller
with the Center orchestra, the tide "concerto" was substituted since
in 1938 the composer had assigned Rhythmicanato an entirely differ-
ent piece for piano solo (no. 557).
M (a) Ink score, incomplete on 15p and 6 masters
(x) Positive photocopy of a copyist's ink score (paged as above) com-
plete on 61p, with a set of parts, in FC at PhFL (no. 7074)
C For some remarks about the rhythmicon made by HC in 1964, see
the foreword to 2 Rhythm-Harmony Quartets (Peters, 1974).
