[518]C A note on the score and in each part reads: "The five movements of
the Mosaic Quartet may be played in any desired order. One sug-
gested way is ... I-II-I-III-IV-III-V-IV-V-I-H-
III-IV-V; but any other ... is equally valid. Each movement must
be understood as being a unit within the total Mosaic pattern of the
form. H.C."
When, a quarter-century later, HC came to write his 15th Symphony
(no. 887), he relied chiefly on this quartet and its predecessor, no.
450. See no. 887, C for the details of his orchestral arrangement of
this Mosaic Quartet?four movements of which are used in five of
the symphonic movements.
