Music and Concert Dancer Dance Observer 4:1 (Jan 1937), pi, 7-9.
The caption date suggests that this project was probably the first he
worked on after his arrest on May 22 and during the time he was
in jail at Redwood City pending trial.

posed 1936" in caption of published score.
 F According to Arthur Cohn, violinist and business manager for the
Stringart Quartet of Philadelphia, that quartet gave the first perfor-
mance of the United Quartet at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia
sometime in the late fall of 1937. No announcement or review has
been located in the Philadelphia papers for the period concerned.

 D HC to Olive Cowell, 7 Sep 1936: "I have just completed the full score
of a suite in 5 short movements for band based on the types of char-
acters one finds among the inmates?a light piece treated somewhat
humorously."
 C According to Bay Area newspapers, the "light piece" was a huge suc-
cess and gave HC an immediately favorable audience of both insiders
and outsiders.
