 C This work was a milestone in HCs career not only because of its length
and organization. On its pl6-18 HC for the first time put into musical
notation the tone clusters with which he had been experimenting at
the piano for some time. He began by writing them out, note for note,
but by p 17 he was merely indicating the outside notes and adding
"arm chord," then "arm." (See Plate 1.)
