C Virgil Thomson's review is representative of the responsive and gen-
erally favorable reviews he gave works by HC after he started writing
for the New York Herald-Tribune in 1940. Reporting in the Tribune,
13 Jan 1949 (pl5, col3), after a Boston Symphony performance under
Koussevitzky in Carnegie Hall the night before:
Henry Cowell's Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 2 for strings alone is
an extended and songful development in the diatonic modal manner
practiced by our back-country forefathers. It sings; it soars; it leaps
with joy. And always it is full of a great seriousness and a great dignity.
Iam not sure it is just the right length for an evocation of that kind.
Myself, I should have preferred it longer. Certainly I was sorry when
it ended, because it had made music all the way through.
