[668] his wife?a violinist?could perform together. The friend hoped to
improve a troubled relationship. By the time, however, this Sonatina
was ready it was already too late: the violin and the voice were get-
ting a divorce, and they never performed the work together. The com-
mission did have one by-product, the Sonatina AP XI (no. 662), a
sonatina for the same combination and similar in style but musically
different.
I The baritone part is entirely in vocalise, with no text, serving equally
with the other instruments. HC therefore places it below the violin,
not above it as he would with a vocal work with text.
F Apparently no public performance until 16 Apr 1964, in Ford Me-
morial Chapel, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA, by Herbert Neurath
(violin), W. S. Wright North (baritone), and Robert Lynn (piano),
