[83]M Pencil draft complete on 7p. On a small piece of music paper laid
in are a 5m sketch for the Senate and a 13m fragment of Moderate
for piano in 3/4 time (on verso and apparently unrelated).
C HC first entered this work, one of his most ambitious to date, as no.
52 in CD with the title "Sonate Proggressive"; he must have decided
it deserved a fuller and more accurate entry, so in the same month
he entered it again as no. 58, with "progressive" spelled correctly and
the 4 movements designated. He also added, top of p5, directions for
enlarging and reshaping the form by varying the order and expand-
ing the movements?thus anticipating the elastic and variable forms
that he introduced in the 1930s, and later in 26 Simultaneous Mosaics
(no. 923).
