C An accompanying note by SRC tells that HC intended this as the open-
ing chorus of what he referred to as "The Opera"; but it was the only
number composed. The characters: Akio (mezzo soprano), Ruhio (con-
tralto), and Maki (baritone). Mixed chorus and piano are reinforced
by "drums sempre."
96[Concerto or piece for piano and orchestra]
 D 18 Mar 1914 (CD 64). In August 1914 HC's mother jotted down, in
an account of his activities, that "in April 1914 he gave two concerts
in Pacific Grove. One included a concerto of his own composition.
He led the orchestra, which numbered only four or five pieces." She
further cited a letter from him to her, dated 29 Mar 1914 at Carmel,
in which he reported "The concerto was performed awfully well."
C No copy is known to have survived, and the entry in CD is unclear
[see frontispiece]. At first glance the title seems to read "Concert piece
to a b + orchestra" with "piano with orchestra" in the adjoining col-
umn. But this reading is awkward and ignores the way "piece" has
been crowded in between "Concert" and "to," which are in larger
script. HC may have intended "Concerto" but have hesitated modestly
in mid-tide, ending up with "Concerto (or Concert Piece) in A-flat
with Orchestra." At any rate, this must be the work that the com-
poser called a concerto in writing to his mother, and it had already
been performed when he wrote her on 29 Mar 1914.

C This piece and a companion. In the Frigids, are reported in the
San Francisco Chronicle (26 Jul 1914, mag sec, p28, coll) to have
been played under a collective title. The Zones, at a musicale of Mrs.
George McGowan, featuring HC. No music under these latter titles
has been found, although both are mentioned more than once in
Cowell papers.
