C The Sixth is probably the least-known of CowelTs symphonies after
Symphonies 1-3. His comment on it, prepared for phonorecord notes:
The entire symphony is generated from a single theme which is pre-
sented in many aspects to engender variety of mood and feeling in the
course of its development. Each of its forms may be seen to be related
to the opening statement and to one another so that a sense of the work's
essential unity is not lost. It integrates early secundal dissonance with
material of a less startling kind.
