D HC to Olive and Harry Cowell, 26 Nov 1953: "I have written quarter-
tone variations on a theme by Mozart for Hans Barth to play."
C HC apparently became interested in quarter-tone music while he was
in Germany as a Guggenheim Fellow in 1931-32, the same period
in which Barth introduced his quarter-tone piano into this country.
It was also the time when HC was involved with the invention of
the rhythmicon. In fact, he was scheduled to lecture on quarter tones
together with the rhythmicon at his Carmel and San Francisco ap-
pearances in mid-May 1932 (see Martha L. Manion, Writings about
Henry Cowell [Brooklyn: I.S.A.M., 1982], nos. 343-44 and 765-68).
