D 24 Apr 1956. HC's original intention was to set a Thanksgiving Hymn
from the scrolls and to follow it with a suitable fuguing tune; the result
would have been no. 11 in the series. But his concept outgrew the
Hymn and Fuguing Tune role, leaving the no. 11 slot vacant, and
became A Thanksgiving Psalm, being first performed as that. In the
meantime, however, HC's esthetic goal changed and widened again,
exceeding the concept of a simple psalm of thanksgiving; hence the
new and final title. The score was complete, he wrote Olive Cowell,
on 24 Apr 1956.
