| 873 | [Possible Malayan national anthem for voices and band] 1959 [No tempo mark on sketches] | |
| D | 1959. HC was one of three Western composers commissioned to write music for a new anthem for Malaya after it became independent on 31 Aug 1957. HC was paid for his contribution (the copy of which was kept by the Malayan government), but it and all the other spe- cially written songs were passed over in favor of Negara Ku ("My Country"), an old Malayan tune with a new text supplied by a com- mittee. HC's music was politely declined because it was thought to be "too Chinese"?a delicate matter in the politics and society of Malaya (and now of Malaysia). | |
