110 First Theme [for piano]
[No tempo mark]
 D Jun? 1914. HC's mother noted, in summer of 1914, that since com-
ing home (to Memo Park) in June HC had "learned the proper Sonata
Form for a first movement with the help of Mr. Arthur Lewis, &
has written first movements of three Sonatas [nos. 114,115, and 119]."
This sketch and the four thematic pairs that follow presumably were
preliminary exercises for the sonatas and therefore were not recorded
in CD.
 M Opening theme roughly sketched in pencil for 16m, with 32m more
barred and sparsely filled in
 C The anacrusis, with an octave leap up followed by a semitone rise,
suggests in a general way a theme that HC used in 3 different forms
toward the end of his life (see nos. 915 and 916; 893, 903, and 945;
and 850). (See Plate 7.)

Anthony in San Francisco Chronicle (26 Jul 1914, mag, p28, coll).
