 D "Written for Godmother Briggs, Xmas 1916" (caption, no. 1). "Writ-
ten for Mrs. Dower for Xmas 1916" (caption, no. 2). These holographs
arrived at the Library of Congress in January 1986 as part of a gift
to the Cowell Collection there from The Temple of the People, Hal-
cyon, CA. The gift also includes nos. 954, 955, 956, and 962, in ad-
dition to new holographs of earlier catalog entries nos. 230, 246, and
258. The gift was presented to the Library of Congress on behalf of
The Temple by Harold E. Forgostein, Guardian-in-Chief, and
Eleanor L. Shumway, Inner Guard, who made the presentation in
gratitude for the countless contributions of HC and SRC to the work
of The Temple over many years.

 C SRC*s comment to WL, letter of 5 Mar 1986: 'The two Polyphonicas
illustrate the first form of dissonant counterpoint that [Charles] Seeger
mentions as having been devised by HC for his 1915 counterpoint class
at UC, Berkeley. All is dissonance except for a few passing tones that
are briefly consonant with other parts but resolve immediately to a
dissonance." Musically, these pieces are related to?but are a step or
two beyond?the dissonance HC cultivated in his no. 217. All three
probably were composed during HC*s first visit to New York City,
Oct 1916-Jan 1917.
954 "The Changes Change" Continuation [for solo voice and unison voices
(mixed chorus as in no. 219/13) with piano]

 D Aug 1917. The solo voice is unidentified, this remnant being only the
last three pages of the number; but the unison singers are identified
as "Manaunaun Riders" and they proclaim: **We are the forces that
