| 213/1 | Dynamic Motion [for piano] Allegro | |
| D | Nov 1916 (CD 166). Nov 1916 was HC's first full month in New York, where he studied briefly at the Institute of Musical Art and prepared for his first public performance in the city. | |
| M | (a) Complete pencil draft, on 6p, dated November 1916 on the MS by HC (via SRC's hand) despite the fact that its paper and nota- tional style appear to be earlier than those of the 4p holograph (b), and that its original tempo mark. Largo, has been replaced by Allegro?the only mark to be seen on the 4p version. (b) A holograph version complete on 4p, with the triangular note- heads that HC developed after his army service (Feb 1918-May 1919). It appears in every way to be the later of the 2 manu- scripts. HC dated it, via SRC's hand, "circa 1914," but one suspects that his memory played him false. | |
| P | Sheet music (4p, preceded by a page with Explanation of Symbols) copyright 1922, Breitkopf and Haertel (later AMP); R in The Piano Music of Henry Cowell, vol. 2 (AMP, 1982), p27-30 | |

The clamor in the subterranean darkness . . . rushing along insanely under the earth, a touch of horror and suggested suspense | |
| . | . . Dynamic Motion spreads like disease through the music. It is beauty in the atomic stage." Louise Vermont, in The Greenwich Villager (15 Apr 1922), reported more urbanely that "for a closing number Cowell played one of his amazing compositions which he calls Dynamic Motion. At the finish of it three women lay in a dead faint | |
