neatly on the page; but the beginning, perhaps on a preliminary leaf,
is missing at least 4m.
 C The Fugue Study Book is an oblong volume with 18 leaves, used as
an exercise book in 1920 when HC was studying theory and composi-
tion with R. Huntington Woodman at the Institute of Applied Music
in New York. A letter mentioned under no. 303 gives evidence that
this first item in the Book probably had been finished no later than
28 Feb. The volume is blank past the first 10 leaves, which contain:
