 I The instrumentation above is that prescribed in the published score.
In the printed program for the first performance, however, HC ex-
pounds his rather permissive concept of the proper instrumentation
of Ensemble and specifies that "for the . . . present production" move-
ment 4 is scored for what amounts to woodwind quintet with string
orchestra. Indeed, even though HC usually referred to this work as
 aquintet?and actually used that term in his printed title?only the
last movement is a quintet in the printed score, and even that was
not true at the first performance. On the verso of the tide-page of
the published score HC provides his best statement of the how and
why of his thunder sticks, which in later years he repudiated as do-
ing more bad for the music than good.

the International Composers' Guild by a group led by Vladimir Sha-
vitch, with the thunder sticks (bull-roarers in the older anthropological
literature) in the hands of HC and two colleagues

is devoted to an unrelated 4-part "Chromatic Instrumental
Fugue" (no. 401) which begins 8m after the Poco piu mosso in

(d) Ink score, partly condensed, of movement 4 for string quintet
alone, though with reminders here and there of woodwinds that
rule out the possibility of its being a string arrangement; on 8p

380a Ensemble [arranged for chamber orchestra]
 D Movements 1 and 2 arranged in 1928 as movements 1 and 2 of Sm-
fonietta (no. 443). Movement 3 of Ensemble was also arranged as
movement 3 of Sinfonietta, but only appeared as such in one record-
ing and at several concerts, according to information from HC via
SRC.
