 D 20 Sep 1938. On HC's list C2 this work is numbered 27 and is said
to have been written "at the request of Emst Bacon, of Converse Col-
lege" (Spartanburg, SC). It was composed between 4 Jul 1938 (HC
letter to Grainger, "just starting") and 20 Sep 1938 (reported to Nicolas
Slonimsky as "finished").

 F In the New School Auditorium, New York, 11 Feb 1940 (New York
Times, 12 Feb 1940, pl5, col2). The performers in that Composers'
Forum-Laboratory concert were Ethel and Otto Luening (soprano
and flute), Marian de Ronde (cello), and Constance Fox (piano).
 M No score located. A 14m pencil sketch for the end of movement 5 is
on p4 of the pencil draft of no. 546.

 D On 26 Sep 1938 HC wrote to Blanche Walton: "It is now finished.
 Ijust call it a Symphonic Set, and in naming it I decided to make
 aspecial set of numbers for my orchestral works. ... I found that
the new work is Symphonic Opus 17." It is the only HC work with
an opus number, however, except for the Opus I of 1912 (no. 27).
