C HC had trouble getting this work polished off to his liking, and he
never quite succeeded. The original score (a) has pages crossed out
and superseded. The somewhat revised version (b) omits movements
3and 7, thus withdrawn before they were publicly performed. On
(a) the ethnic labels are crossed out, and they are omitted entirely
from (b). The latter is accompanied by a note in SRC's hand: "This
is one of four scores HC felt were unsuccessful, which he wished
withdrawn from circulation and not performed."
