 F "My one and only essay at an organ piece . . . was played very suc-
cessfully in the Washington, D.C., Cathedral by William Strickland"
(HC to Olive and Harry Cowell, 19 Nov 1942). The occasion, on Sun-
day, 1 Nov 1942, was a concert after vespers by the Army Music School
Choir of Fort Myer, VA, of which Strickland was director. (He reports
that he programmed the piece under HC's title Cortege, but that the
tide was changed upon publication.)
