[711]C The theme in the top part is based on the begining of no. 696/2, which
HC also used in no. 697 (finale. Moderate). Here the accent is shifted
one beat earlier. No evidence of 5 previous such inventions for SRC
has been seen; one suspects that "sixth" refers to the anniversary, just
as "seventh" (no. 724) does a year later even though another inven-
tion was the 2 Jun 1948 birthday present (no. 718).

D HC to Harry Cowell, 29 Sep 1947: "I have just finished a string quartet
written especially for the Roth Quartet."
I On occasion this work has been played by a string orchestra, with
the basses omitted or playing the cello part ad lib.
F Recital Hall, Florida State University, Tallahassee, 11 May 1948, by
the Florida State University School of Music Faculty String Quartet,
Karl Kursteiner 1st violin. The piece was written for Feri Roth, dedi-
cated to Roth, and in good time mailed to Roth. Roth never got the
package. HC in turn got no acknowledgment, no thanks, no word
of a performance. Mutual unhappiness?all for the want of a mail
