[743] to profit from his battle-won popularity and retired instead. (Accord-
ing to various biographies, he served as Director Supremo of Chile
from his miltary victory in 1817 until 1823. When various factions
then vied for control of the first truly national government of Chile,
he went into exile in Peru rather than lead his supporters against the
rival factions.)
The libretto was written in the period 1947-49 when General Dwight
Eisenhower declined offers of presidential candidacy from both U.S.
parties and instead became president of Columbia University. After
Eisenhower changed his mind and became president, HC felt that
aproduction of his opera would suggest a political statement he never
intended to make. He therefore accepted with somewhat less regret
the unhappy fate of his most ambitious operatic undertaking.
Various individual numbers from the (condensed) score have been per-
formed in concert on numerous occasions.
