[767]C It is clear that these drafts represent HC's thoughts in some under-
taking at an early point when unsure whether for orchestra or band.
The condensed score of (1) mentions both orchestral and band instru-
ments; (2) is clearly for band. No. (1) became the Air (no. 767/la);
(2) has not been seen elsewhere.

 D HC to Charles Ives, 5 Jan 1952: "I have been writing some music
for Marc Connelly's pageant. . . which may be produced at the Met
on Jan. 27 for UNESCO."
 T Revision by Marc Connelly of his play Ex Cathedra published in
Theatre Arts Monthly 10:12 (Dec 1926), p844-48
 I Heading pi of the score, in HC's hand: "Composer: Henry Cowell.
Creative Arranger: Henry Brant." The voices and instruments are not
listed. The cues, in very condensed score, indicate several solo voices,
 amixed chorus divided at one point into SSAATTBB, and an in-
strumental group with "wind" and "percussion" plus?perhaps?
strings. Added to the pit ensemble in 1 scene is "cart music" on stage
(oboe and tenor drums are mentioned).
 M (a) Ink condensed score on 19 masters
(b) Pencil sketches, 6p
