Hayes]
Con vivo - Poco meno mosso
D 1952. The prehistory of this song is a bit curious: on two handwrit-
ten lists of his works HC dates it 1947, though no sign of its existence
has been found until 1952, when he completed draft (b) and gave
it to Roland Hayes, for whom he had set the poem. Apparendy Hayes
felt that a few of Blake's allusions to race were too indelicate for him
to use; so, about two years later, Hayes and the Cowells made some
judicious changes in the text, omitting the first stanza and changing
afew words, and HC then made the necessary musical alterations.
The new version was delivered to Hayes "about 28 Jun 1954," accord-
ing to SRC's note laid in.
